Day 4: Dealing with Data

Day 4: Dealing with Data

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

In this particular session we looked at exploring the realm of 'SHARE'. Having grown up in the age where myspace, bebo and youtube exploded into our lives during high school it didn't seem surprising the importance of sharing, especially as it is a way of connecting to one another - Story times on youtube have been a great example of this.

Plus, I always find it brings purpose to creating - if there was no audience, the intention or purpose of creating seems lost. Why bother with creating, if no one is going to comment or consume the content I'm making?

I have noticed this in even my own practice in writing sessions, while at the end of each writing time the class comes down to the mat and shares their writing with a buddy next to them, and should they choose to - to the class.

That being said, finding an audience is not something that is passive - if students want to create and maintain an audience they need to constantly interact and provide content.

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”—B.B. KING

I also really related to the quote "Share to finish learning"
which got me to the realisation that sharing holds even me accountable.

When I have a date that I have to share a blog post by, or an assignment which needs to be in I get it done! With my students I can see this being so much better than the usual work that is in books, which sometimes, never ever seems to get finished.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Google Forms

I have used Google forms previously, but I have never created a form before. I had a lot of fun with using the different question types. I could definitely see me using google forms in the future to gather and collect student voice. I believe I could also teach my students to create their own google forms eventually.

My Map

I had fun exploring the my map feature on Google. I have my own map on my classroom wall where the cultures of students have been displayed using string. I would love students to explore their own maps digitally to see where their ancestry is from!

Google Sheets

Google sheets is something I use personally to help with my wedding budgeting. I hadn't used it for data analysis but I could see how the tools here could be beneficial in providing visual feedback when it comes to making charts etc. I personally struggle with anything that relates to numbers so at first I found this quite intimidating, but I was able to link the prior knowledge of excel to recognise formulas. Made me thankful that I had taken ICT during high school :).

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Honestly? All the tools I used today are going to be SO useful moving forward - even just recognising how to use these tools in different ways. I was getting major wanderlust looking at all the destinations during our map activity and it had me wanting to plan and organise my own honeymoon!

Day 3: Media

Day 3: Media

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I loved exploring the realm of the 'CREATE' side of Manaiakalani. It really inspired me to provide and look into more opportunities where students could actually represent their learning in a way that stems from their interests and uses a more creative thinking -/ hands on approach. I can relate to this, as I am quite a visual/ hands on learner.

"When it comes to learning, if the hands are involved the head really gets going." - Stuart Middleton

It also fostered the concept of learning through play, and enables students to have their own drive to follow through their learning in different ways.

Looking and producing work that does not all look the same. I think also fostering and believing in students enough to trust them to explore their own creative ideas.

"Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results." John Dewey

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Youtube

I have used Youtube previously in the class, but I had not thought about creating a playlist of videos for my students to explore. I also thought having an option to stop the suggestion function was really helpful, especially because of the fear that students will click from one video to another and then land on something they shouldn't have seen.

Film making
I have always wanted to do this in my class. Previously we had worked through I-Movie on the iPads and students have uploaded their own clips through the format of 'landscape shot' etc. I would love to expand, and move to different areas of movie making - especially through stop motion movie making, News reporting using green screen, filming interviews and doing a lot of work and exploration through drama. Would love sharing these having a film festival or even on the blogs so that students and whanau have access to them and celebrate what they've created.

From my own experience of using a little video camera and making videos with my friends and family it is really awesome to see this being explored in our own classroom spaces. I just need to make sure my students can manage themselves in a way where they can work together to produce content.

Podcasting
Eventually, I'd love to have a space where students can podcast, maybe this could be done through a book club? I have a lot of chatty, funny, bubbly students so I feel this would be a great tool for them to explore and enjoy.

Google Drawing
Would be amazing way for students to create digital posters and illustrate themselves digitally. Would be also cool to see students creating their own memes possibly? There are plenty of ideas that could be explored through Google drawing.

Google Slides
I have always wanted to eventually create Google Slides that students can work from and use in their learning. I really want to in the future get more confident with interactive slides where students can move images around and use the slides as a fun interactive working document.
I have not personally reached this point yet as I feel if I were to create so many activities now the activities would not be used to their advantage due to the amount of time my students have with devices, but in the future this is definitely something I want to be really good at.

I could also look into creating an animation with google slides and even getting my students to create a little video with their own animations.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Personally, I believe that it has helped me to think outside of the box a bit more. I feel like it helps me even accessing my own creativity and exploring areas that may feel a little daunting, but are worth it in the long run.

Day 2 Workflow

Day 2: Manaiakalani Workflow

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I really enjoyed hearing about how the process of learn, create and share can enhance the relevance of new learning, facilitate shared learning by providing opportunities for students to communicate and interact with their classmates - and even possibly students around the globes.

"Technology enables removal of barriers, previously inconceivable solutions to problems, opportunities for new ways of learning"

We learnt about R.A.T.E and how we would be moving from an analogue world into the digital world.

RECOGNISE

AMPLIFY

TURBOCHARGE

EFFECTIVE PRACTICE

The presentation also had me thinking about how learning looks like in our school -

The question that was made was would the values of the school be shown in every class if someone was to walk into them?

I honestly believe so, with a twang of differences between our bilingual units, mainstream and different levels - but i believe the fundamentals are engrained in our school, but I think this would also make a great discussion in our school meetings.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Google Keep

Learning about Google keep was really awesome - I really loved the idea of having a place where I can keep images of things that I am inspired by for my class and resources, I also love the idea of taking photos.

I also loved the idea of reminders - especially to remind you when you reach a certain point on your map.
To remind you to talk to someone at work or have access to the grocery list every time you pass by your grocery store.

Gmail

Making my own signature was really cool, especially because I have always wanted to make one but never really knew how. I know now moving forward that I can play around with this feature and maybe even add a signature to my personal email account.

Embedding Videos

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Google Keep

Voice Memos!

This will really good for recording my students and maybe even getting them record their own learning when they are working independently.
Image to text

Looking at the image to text function, I could see this as being really helpful for my students to use as activities. Maybe story starters? Editing and adding their own thoughts on parts of the sentences? Just thinking about it now has me having multiple ideas.

Google Meet

If there was a moment where Covid did effect us again in the future, or if I wanted to have a session with my students that needed some extra help at home I could use Google Meet.

During my time on google meet I realised my computer did not give me access to screen recording so I had to trouble shoot and make sure the permissions were accepted before it finally worked.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Google Meet - meetings

Google Keep - Keeping myself organised and even to be used as a virtual diary

Google Calendar - really good for keeping my updated on what I have coming up in my life and also including my friends and family into the calendar.

Day 1 reflections and thoughts

This morning when I woke up, I was excited to get into the nitty gritty of everything Manaiakalani.
I had seen so many of my staff go through the programme and I was excited to get into the hands on aspects of learning.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I loved hearing Dorothy Burt talking about the why of Manaiakalani and it was inspiring to learn about the steps that went into place that have led it to what it has become today.

Especially due to the circumstances that were overcome. This comes from a place where in the past I would find it a little worrying when considering implementing technology into my organisation when I felt I did not have enough access to technology.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

For workflow it would definitely be the organisational side of things - especially with google drive. I have only started using google drive this year with our school, as previously I kept all of my resources either on our school server or on my own hard drive. I know that in the future I will be able to slowly add all of my resources to my google drive and access it easily using the organisational tools I learnt today.

Using a table of contents for documents in future to make things easier.

Remove.pg website for removing backgrounds in images.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Speaking to text - tools/ voice typing. Giving students a chance to have their voice heard and get their writing done. Students need to practice to make sure it is picking up their voice properly. Note: Make sure students are in a room that is not too noisy so it is only their voice that is being picked up Making sure that the accent of New Zealand english has been selected
Read and write extension could also be good for students to listen back to what they have written if they struggle with reading.

Note: I will need to model and scaffold students so that when they need to add punctuation to their work, that they are saying "full stop, exclamation mark etc" Names for example may need to be spelt out for the voice recognition Read&Write for Google Chrome™ is the extension you can use to have the device read text back to you. Do they need to re-check and edit their writing? Explore tool - Students can look and add images contained on the document through the explore tool. All these images are also great when it comes to not having copyrighted images.

I would possibly use Google groups with my class when it comes to emailing in future.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

To not be afraid to try new things and be creative. To give things a go and to not let my fear of letting people down stop me from asking questions.
